Help for Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar Fasciitis is the most common reason for heel pain in patients at our podiatry office. This happens to be the case since the plantar fascia ligament connects the heel bone to the toes. When it’s strained, it becomes weak and swollen. If there is frequent pressure, many small tears can form on the ligament. Plantar fasciitis can develop in all age groups (although it is more prone in the elderly) and has a higher chance of occurring if:

  • your feet roll inwards when walking
  • you have high arches
  • you are standing for long periods of time
  • you are obese
  • you wear shoes that do not fit correctly and cause high amounts of friction to your feet.
  • you have a tight Achilles tendon
  • you have high arches or flat feet

You don’t want to take chances with your heal as it’s a vital part of your mobility. Taking the proper precautions and following the recommended treatment tips below will go a long way for your heal comfort.

Try massaging your foot to treat heel pain and to reduce long-lasting discomfort. Physical therapy can help in this regard.

Try using support devices such as shoe inserts or orthotics as they can help to alleviate pressure from the plantar fascia.

  1. Try taking medications such as anti-inflammatories to reduce swelling.
  2. Get plenty of rest to allow the plantar fascia to heal.
  3. Use ice therapy to reduce inflammation.
