Safety Tips to Avoid Recurring Warts

Warts are not a particularly dangerous medical condition. In fact, they are quite common. Warts can occur anywhere on your body, but they primarily appear on your hands and feet. They are caused by a virus, and because they can be transferred by contact, are often considered contagious. They develop as a result of exposure to the human papillomavirus (HPV).

When warts occur on your feet, they are known as Plantar’s warts. A few of the common symptoms of Plantar’s warts include: lesions on your feet, pain when you stand or walk, and tiny black spots that are the result of tiny clotted blood vessels. Like regular warts, Plantar’s warts are also the result of exposure to HPV.

While warts are harmless and generally disappear on their own, you may have to consult with a physician in the event your symptoms get worse. Foot care specialist Marshall Lukoff, DPM, FAAFS of Foot Care Specialists of Quincy and Needham, MA, has the experience and expertise to help you deal with warts that resist treatment.

Safety tips to avoid recurring warts

There are several things you can do to avoid recurring warts. These include avoiding touching any warts, including your own, as this may cause the warts to spread. Maintain healthy feet by washing your feet, using clean socks and wearing clean flip-flops if you have to go to the gym.  Don’t pick at your Plantar’s warts, as this will increase the likelihood of them recurring.

When to see a physician

Despite any careful measures you may take to avoid the recurrence of warts, if your condition worsens, you should consult with a foot specialist. Here are some things to look out for:

  • Bleeding lesions on your feet
  • Warts that are resistant to any kind of treatment
  • Pain that interferes with your daily activities
  • If you suffer from a compromised immune system
  • Diabetics should take particular care to report any changes to their foot specialist

If you experience any worsening symptoms of Plantar’s warts, you should consult with a foot specialist immediately.

Marshall Lukoff, DPM, FAAFS, and his professional staff at Foot Care Specialists in Quincy and Needham, MA, are here to help you. You can receive an accurate diagnosis and partner with the physician to develop a plan to help you avoid the recurrence of Plantar’s Warts.
