Ankle sprains can be quite painful and lead to instability in the ankle joint if not treated properly. This condition causes ligaments that provide stability to the ankle to be stretched to the outer or inner portion of the ankle, which can lead to extreme stretching or tearing of those ligaments. This movement of the ligaments usually happens in a forceful manner whereby the ankle is twisted in an unusual way. The sprain often occurs in a sudden manner, and can cause swelling, redness, and an inability to bear weight on the ankle. Treatment that focuses on providing long-term vigor is crucial in preventing this condition from recurring.
What can you do for an ankle sprain?
● Immobilizing the sprained ankle for a short time can help relieve pain and inflammation.
● Taping and the use of ankle braces will provide support to the injured ankle.
● Physical therapy will be very important in strengthening the ankle so that it does not sprain as easily again.
● High-intensity activities should be lessened as the ankle recovers.
● Use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatories will aid in reducing pain and swelling. These should not be used often as they can suppress natural healing.
● When conservative treatment methods are not effective at stopping chronic ankle instability and aching, surgical procedures may be necessary to provide lasting relief. These procedures may involve repairing or reconstructing the ankle ligaments so that they are not easily torn or stretched thereafter.
