Nail fungus infection, or Onychomycosis, is a condition which can be embarrassing and even painful. It is caused by microscopic organisms called dermatophytes which live on the nail bed and the nail plate (the same organisms which cause athlete's foot on the skin's surface). The build-up of these organisms is usually due to foot perspiration, poor shoe/sock ventilation, toenail injury, pedicures in unsterilized facilities or walking barefoot in damp areas such as a gym or locker room. The toenail provides the fungus with an extremely well-protected place to live.
